Donegal has lot’s of popular islands, and situated around 15km from the shore at Sheephaven Bay is the unspoiled Tory Island. Be sure to visit Tra Na Rossan Beach on your way south towards the town of Bunbeg where you will need to get a ferry out to Tory Island. Indeed, the island is accessible by 40 minute ferry from both Bunbeg and Magheroarty, allowing you to easily access the island and enjoy a few hours of tranquility as you stroll around the island.
Tory Island is the only inhabited Irish island that has been designated as a Special Protection Area for birds by the E.U., so you’ll have plenty of choice when it comes to bird watching and photo opportunities. Species of shark, whale and seals have been known to locate near the island, so keep an eye out for the sealife while exploring the island.
A Gaeltacht area, the locals will speak in their native Irish tongue but are only too happy to help with any questions you may have, whether you converse in English or Irish. On your return to land, be sure to check out the picturesque Bunbeg Harbour.
