Take a trip down memory lane, and discover the workhouse generation of Ireland’s past in Carrickmacross Workhouse. One of the few remaining restored workhouse’s in Ireland, Carrickmacross Workhouse tells the story of the struggles of Irish people, and the plight of the people of South Monaghan as they battled with British rule and famine. Carrickmacross was one of over 100 workhouses in Ireland during the 1800s, and a tour of the workhouse today, shares the emotional story of our ancestors as they struggled for a better life.
With a museum dedicated to the Great Irish Famine and an exhibition depicting the lives and times of Carrickmacross some 6000 years ago, a trip to Carrickmacross Workhouse will bring you face to face with Ireland’s ancient, and more recent past.
